Dizziness and Vertigo Relief in East Brunswick

Many people confuse dizziness with vertigo, but they are two different sensations. Dizziness and vertigo can also have different causes. Because of this, it’s important to know how to tell the difference between the two.

With dizziness, you may feel woozy, light-headed or off-balance, feeling as if you are going to fall. With vertigo, many people also report feeling dizzy. However, vertigo actually describes the feeling as if your surroundings or you are moving.

Vertigo sufferers may feel a spinning, whirling or tipping sensation, and like dizziness, vertigo can also impair balance, and cause a person to experience nausea or vomiting. Both conditions can be caused by a variety of factors.

At Freedman Chiropractic, we have over 43 years of experience helping patients with dizziness and vertigo.

Causes of Vertigo

The most common type of this condition is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It happens when small crystals of calcium get loose in your inner ear. You may feel it when you’re getting in or out of bed or tilting your head up. People over age 60 are more likely to get BPPV. It’s also the easiest type of vertigo to treat. Treatments may include the Epley, Semont, Half-Somersault or Foster Maneuvers, and Brandt-Daroff Exercise.

Before you try to treat it yourself, see your doctor. If you have vertigo, you’ll need to know what type it is and which ear has the problem.

Causes of Dizziness

A major cause of dizziness is a condition known as Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC), particularly involving the cervical vertebrae which are the bones of the neck. When the neck vertebrae go out of alignment, they can compress and irritate nerves, the brainstem and impair the blood supply to the brain. These disruptions affect how the nervous system functions and can create symptoms such as dizziness.

The VSC can be caused by things such as a bad sleeping position, poor posture and trauma. Even the birth process—no matter how long ago that was—can cause the vertebrae of the neck to misalign and, if left undetected and uncorrected, cause dizziness much later in life.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Dr. Ken Freedman will check you for Vertebral Subluxation Complex. If detected, he will provide you with chiropractic adjustments to relieve pressure on the nerves. This allows the nervous system to improve the body’s capacity to self-heal and function better, including your body’s ability to heal from dizziness and vertigo.

If we determine the cause of your dizziness or vertigo is from a cause other than VSC, or is unresponsive to the most frequently recommended self-help maneuvers, we may refer you to the appropriate health care provider for evaluation and treatment.

Correcting the Underlying Problem

Chiropractic care is a preferred approach for those who avoid taking medications. We locate and address the interferences to natural healing so that the body can function optimally and have the best opportunity to heal dizziness and vertigo. In most cases, patients respond fast and are thrilled with their long-lasting results.

Success Stories

Vertigo can negatively impact a person’s quality of life by interfering with their ability to do the things they love. We’ve helped thousands of vertigo sufferers over the years! A couple of recent success stories show how getting rid of vertigo can give you your life back.

We had a patient whose vertigo was so bad that he couldn’t drive or ride in a car. He was a salesman and his livelihood depended on his ability to go out and visit customers, which the dizziness was preventing him from doing. His girlfriend is a patient of ours and suggested he come see us. Dr. Freedman examined him, located the subluxations and corrected them with gentle chiropractic adjustments. Within a few visits, his dizziness had completely resolved and he was back to work.

Another patient loved going to amusement parks and riding roller coasters. When her vertigo kept her from riding coasters, she came to us. Dr. Freedman located and adjusted the subluxations that were interfering with her ability to heal. After a few adjustments, she was able to get back to enjoying the roller coasters.
