Tech Neck Relief in East Brunswick

back view of woman using computer with neck painChiropractors are used to seeing patients who are hunched over with their head forward—but in the past, these patients were elderly, with decades of poor posture creating their forward-head position. Now, we see patients of all ages suffering from this condition as a result of spending countless hours hunched over laptops, tablets and phones. This condition is referred to as “text neck” or “tech neck.”

At Freedman Chiropractic, we help correct the underlying physical cause of tech neck and help you make lifestyle changes to prevent the condition from recurring or worsening.

Kids and Technology

Even little kids spend hours on their devices, which can set the stage for lifelong problems caused by forward head posture. We encourage patients to bring their kids (no matter how young or old) into our office to get checked out. With regular checkups, adjustments and home care exercises to strengthen the neck, many of the unpleasant issues caused by tech neck can be avoided.

Ideally, your head should rest on your neck like a golf ball on a tee. This position is neutral and doesn’t strain the neck and shoulder muscles. Your head weighs about as much as a bowling ball, and your neck muscles have to hold that bowling ball in position throughout the day. If you hold your head forward—for example, to look down at your phone— it strains the muscles of the neck and shoulders, and can cause misalignment of the spinal joints, nerve irritation, pain, weakness, numbness and tingling, headaches, dizziness, TMJ problems and fatigue.

Studies have shown that for every one inch your head moves forward from a neutral position, approximately, an extra 10 pounds of pressure is exerted on your spinal neck joints and muscles. If left undetected and uncorrected, tech neck leads to irritated nerves, painful and limited neck and shoulder mobility, arthritis, disc herniations, and numbness and tingling in the arms or hands.

When the spinal nerves are irritated, the organs, tissues and systems controlled by those nerves don’t receive proper energy. So in addition to the impairment of the musculoskeletal system, there is a serious impairment in the function of the body’s other physiological systems individually, and in concert with one another. As a result, the body does not work up to its full potential. Imagine how poorly your car would run and how long it would last if it were not firing on all cylinders.

Dr. Freedman will conduct a thorough checkup. He’ll locate any areas of subluxation and correct them by adjusting the appropriate regions of the spine. This restores proper spinal alignment, relieves pressure on the nervous system, and allows the body to function better naturally.

Dr. Freedman was a professor of chiropractic technique at New York Chiropractic College. He is an expert in a wide variety of adjusting techniques that he will tailor to your clinical needs and personal preferences. He has specialized expertise in adjusting techniques that don’t involve any “twisting, cracking or popping” of the spinal joints. With over forty-three years’ experience, Dr. Freedman can provide chiropractic care so all of his patients achieve excellent results safely and affordably, in the shortest amount of time possible.

In addition to addressing your chiropractic needs, Dr. Freedman will make lifestyle recommendations on how to minimize tech neck, while still enjoying the convenience of using your electronic devices. This may include evaluating your posture with suggestions on how you can work smarter and not harder. Most people appreciate simple changes they can make that can help prevent problems like tech neck and its devastating effects on body function.
